Great gas mileage, sport suspension, navigation, reverse camera, 5 speed, nice interior and all for under $20k.

I drove one recently, and while it had a nice spec, it just did nothing for me. Completely forgettable car

Manual or auto?
I enjoyed the 2.0t A4, so this may do something for me.

I wonder how much more expensive it would be to put a six-speed in it. That could probably increase fuel economy, right?
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:08 |

According to VW, the 5-Speed is actually better for fuel economy.

Do they still build Jettas? I haven’t seen a new one in ages, even though VW is still the #1 selling manufacturer where I live.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:08 |

Really? Huh. I didn’t know that.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:09 |

Yup, I see them all the time.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:09 |

Yup, I recall seeing it somewhere. Forgot where though :P

That has to be one looking new $20k interiors I’ve ever seen.

They’re really nice.
Sat in one, I was very impressed with the materials and overall fit and finish. Leather wrapped wheel and shift knob too...

That’s an odd color combo for the seats given the color of the rest of the car. I assume they are cloth?
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:21 |
|
Oh they sell billions of them every year, just not in europe.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:22 |

Leatherette.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:24 |
|
Gotcha. Price is not bad at all for a brand new car.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:25 |
|
My local dealer has a few for $17k. Which is a really good price.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:27 |
|
Wow, that’s almost unheard of in this day and age. Usually in that price range it’s gonna be a tiny base model car that most of us wouldn’t want to behin with.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:29 |
|
They just don’t sell them where people can afford better/nicer cars. I mostly see Golfs, Sportwagens, and Audis in my neighborhood.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:29 |
|
Much less a turbocharged car loaded with options and accessories. I'm tempted.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:33 |
|
Not bad, but the new 1.8T is missing a few valves...
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:39 |
|
They sell them cheap for a reason. You will be ok if you are leasing
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:41 |
|
And that reason is?.....
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:42 |

You get a warranty
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:44 |

You get a warranty buying?
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:44 |

Wow that interior is really nice
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:50 |

Had a 1st Gen Jetta - nice little car.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 12:54 |

Extra gear doesn’t mean it’s a taller gear, just more tightly spaced.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 13:10 |
|
Auto. That gearbox was a big part of its dreariness.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 13:11 |

Ah, the five speed was really nice feeling. Short throws and good distance.
Was the 1.8t any good?

We're in the market to replace my 01 Golf. It will be my wife's DD, but she said she's okay with a manual. That makes me happy. Besides, my 13-year-old will be driving soon (too soon) and I want him to learn stick. It's a life skill. We'll definitely be looking at one of these.

A bit asthmatic, and definitely hapmered by a poorly managed transmission. I found the ride to be pretty poor for such an average economy car too.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 13:31 |

Very true. I don’t blame you.

Why not get a gti? Same price but New car on better platform same interior more space faster similar fuel economy fancy lights etc. I can’t believe how much they’ve dropped in price since the scandal: http://m.cars.com/vehicledetail/…

I prefer the aesthetics of the Golf wagon though.

Much higher insurance, worse gas mileage.
I need economy over speed.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 14:29 |

The city rating is the same, 25 for both. The highway is 34 for gti and 39 for jetta. At 10k miles a year you’ll use 270 gallons at 39 mpg. The gti for 10k miles will be 294 gallons per year. 24 gallons extra at 3 bucks means you’ll pay just 72 more bucks a year on gas. This doesn’t seem even remotely important and that with the purely highway situation. As far as insurance I ran some numbers on a base model last year when I was car shopping and there wasn’t a big difference between jetta and gti and the bigger differences seemed to come from the insurance provider not the car. Most company’s wanted 120/month for my focus st and geico wanted 60 for who knows why. All I'm saying is don't discount it without doing a lot of research as the gti would be so much more car than an aging model base jetta

I’m very happy with our ‘08 Passat. VW is doing good lately, besides that little diesel mess.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 16:06 |

I'm not getting a GTI.
![]() 01/30/2016 at 16:40 |

And according to VW, we can have Clean Diesel too

Don't fight it

Just bought one identical to the one pictured. Coming from somebody who’s owned an Audi A4, then an A6 the Jetta feels great if not better than the two Audis.

I just bought one in the same spec as pictured. I love it so far. If you want to know anything, I can answer questions.
Btw, the clutch is VERY forgiving. It would be a great car to learn manual on.
![]() 02/01/2016 at 18:18 |

I’ll keep this in mind, thanks. The problem now is just finding time for my wife and me to go shopping. My 01 Golf is still on the original clutch after 215k miles. I hope you get similar life out of yours!
![]() 02/01/2016 at 18:46 |
|
Wow, that's pretty great!
![]() 02/01/2016 at 18:49 |

I need to stop saying it, though. I’ll jinx it! After 15 years and all those miles, the interior has gone to complete hell (the headliner is held up with staples), the heat doesn’t work because all the insulation has come off of the blend door inside the dash, it’s leaking oil and coolant (most VWs come with their oil leaks installed by the factory), the plastic is rotting, the door locks don’t work right, the rear defroster and rear windshield wiper haven’t worked in 10 years. But it still runs and the AC still blows cold. I can’t kill it. Not that I want to. I’ll be sad to see it go.

Haha, sounds like she's served you well!

It did indeed, and continues to do so.

Nice.
yes I just went through your post history to find these pictures, since all you post is interior shots and I had no idea what color the exterior was, lol.

Thanks, haha.
And my bad for no pictures :)
![]() 05/02/2016 at 22:30 |

no problem, late congrats on the purchase.
hahaha don’t worry about it. I more likely just forgot I saw these back when you bought the car and had to refresh my memory
